Umalas / Kerobokan
If you want to be surrounded by rice paddies but still be only fifteen minutes from the action in Seminyak then Umalas is the perfect location. Despite being close to all the top restaurants and bars Umalas this lovely pocket of south Bali still has a bucolic feel. You’ll see farmers tending to their rice paddies and you may even have a cow munching on your grass in the fields in front of your villa.
Umalas is home to much of the French expat community, the benefit of which is that it has some great cafes, bakeries, restaurants and a seriously good ice creamery.
Jalan Umalas 1
These three fantastic eateries form a triangle on Jalan Umalas 1 and are all within walking distance of each other.
– This little café possibly does the best breakfast/brunch in all of
Bali. You have to try the eggs benedict and the coffee is world
standard. They also bake specials daily so you can keep going back to
try something new.
Nook – Set right within a
lush green rice paddy (bring your camera) this busy warung is brilliant
value for money. They do a good selection of local dishes and have a
great seafood grill at night time. Even the wine prices are reasonable.
Hotei – This popular warung got so busy that within the first few
months of opening they had to renovate and expand. That’s got to be a
good sign. They serve great breakfasts, delicious sandwiches, juices,
salads, burgers and pan-Asian cuisine.
Jalan Umalas 2
Gelato & Café - This is an absolute must do! The ice cream here is
simply delicious. The Italian/French husband and wife team use the
freshest ingredients and incorporate local produce such as dragon fruit,
mango and guava. They also make a great coffee and bake their own
Monsieur Spoon – Close your eyes and
you’re in Paris. Best croissants on the island. On any island. Hands
down. The macaroons and cakes are also spectacular.
Casetta - With an bona fide Italian chef in the kitchen you know
you’re getting the real deal. The homemade pasta is a standout.
Coffee – If you’re on the search for a really good coffee then look no
further than Bumbak Coffee, located directly next door to La Casetta.
Geulis – It doesn’t look like much from the outside but this warung
serves absolutely delicious and authentic Indonesian food. Very popular
with the expats.
Outback Warung – If you’re craving a touch of Oz and need a steak, this place is for you.
La Jolie – French food in a rice paddy setting. Only in Bali.
La Creperie – Speaking of French…you can grab a delicious savoury or sweet pancake here.
Warung Global – Cheap and hearty Indonesian food. Great for when you don’t feel like venturing out and want home delivery.
Seki Tei Japanese – Fresh and tasty Japanese. Great sushi.
Hairdresser – tucked away on Jalan Umalas 2 is Spoiled Hairdresser. Run
by a Dutchman this is a very popular spot for a quality snip.
- There are a string of massage and beauty salons in Umalas that are
all incredibly reasonably priced and generally very good. Get a
traditional Balinese massage at a salon close to your villa and stumble
home feeling blissed out.
